Fire Alarm System

A fire alarm system is a chain of devices that detects the presence of smoke, fire, carbon monoxide, and other fire-related risks in installed places through its detectors and sensors. After detection, it notifies and warns the related or present people through audio-visual installed devices. The main purpose of the fire alarm system is to address the risk due to the triggering of fire and smoke at the installed location, so that early mitigation action, like suppression of fire and safe evacuation of human resources, can be made at the earliest.
With the growth of metropolitan cities in Pakistan, fire safety regulations and suppression are more crucial to human life and other properties. Major cities in Pakistan like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad have huge developments towards shopping malls, commercial complexes, and industrial zones. A fire alarm system provides early fire detection and warns the users to take immediate action for fire suppression. It is also a compliance requirement for building safety standards. It gives peace of mind to premises management and owners for risk-free operations. To explore all fire alarm systems products, visit Honeywell Gent in Pakistan.

Fire Alarm System Devices

The fire alarm system includes the following equipment.

  1. Smoke detectors:  It is used to detect smoke that arises due to a fire, short circuit, or any other incident. It then sends a signal to the sounder for notification.
  2. Heat detector: It detects the heat at the installed location when the heat level rises above a certain temperature. It sends a signal to Sounder for notification.
  3. Manual Call points: These are used to send a manual signal to notify of an emergency. These are mostly installed at places where there are no smoke or heat detectors.
  4. Control Panel: Also known as FACP, the fire alarm control panel is a central device that controls the whole system’s operations.
  5. Alarm Sounders and Siren: These are the notification devices that provide audio alarms to designated places.
  6. Flasher: It is a visual notification devices that work in a situation of no light.
  7. Fire-Rated Cable: Unlike the simple cable, the fire-rated cable keeps the fire alarm system active for a longer time than a simple cable. It is the most important part of the fire alarm system, which is not considered by inexperienced installers and designers.
  8. Fire Suppression Cylinders: After detection of fire, Fire suppression cylinders help the user to quickly suppress the fire. Five types of fire suppression cylinders are DCP, CO2, Foam, Wet chemical, and water cylinders.

The above devices of the fire alarm system can be integrated with a water sprinkler system, emergency lighting, and a public address voice evacuation system for modern life safety building applications.

Types of Fire Alarm Systems Available in Pakistan

In Pakistan, there are 3 types of fire alarm systems

  1. Conventional Fire Alarm System: In general and small-to-medium installations Conventional fire alarm system is more popular. This is the zone-based fire alarm system, where system fire alarm devices are designed and installed according to zones, ie, each floor is allocated to a single zone. In this fire alarm application, fire is detected or notified as a whole zone, and therefore, it is suitable for installation in small buildings.
  2. Addressable Fire Alarm System: In Pakistan an addressable fire alarm system installation, each device of the fire alarm system is allocated an address. If there is an incident of fire, the fire alarm control panel (FACP) pinpoints the exact device that has triggered the detection of fire. The addressable fire alarm systems are installed at large buildings because they enable the user of the fire alarm system a quicker response for detection and suppression of fire.
  3. Wireless Fire Alarm System: Wireless fire alarm systems serve the same function without wires. It is mostly installed at locations where wiring is not possible or the location has a huge height.
